Turkish Carpet

Seccade (Prayer) Carpets has been woven throughout the centuries for mainly the purpose of prayer. Hence most of these rugs have a niche or "mihrab" and they are usually in the size of 4 feet by 6 feet. While most of these rugs were woven for one individual, there has also carpets and kilims woven for more than one person or for a "cemaat," which were known as "saf" rugs.

Of all the colours of rugs and kilims in Anatolia, red is the most commonly used. The source of this colour is the Madder plant (Rubia Tintorum L). Insect originated pigments are: Cochineal (Dactylopius coccus Costa), Ararat Kermes (Porphyrophora hamali Brand), Kermes (Kermes vermillio Plane) and Lac (Kerria Lacce Kerr) insects.
